Emily's favorite Causes I

Around late August '08 I posted an article from Ecorazzi plus another article from the web site of Green with Glamour about Emily where she listed 9 causes she holds "near and dear." Being that we don't have too many news these days I thought that I could tell you a bit more about these 9 great causes (plus two more I'm adding) and Emily's involvement with each of them:

"The HSUS is the nation's largest animal protection organization with more than ten million members and constituents. The HSUS is a mainstream voice for animals, with active programs in companion animals, wildlife and habitat protection, animals in research, and farm animals. Our mission is to celebrate animals and confront cruelty. The HSUS protects all animals through legislation, litigation, investigation, education, advocacy and field work. A non-profit organization, The HSUS celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2004, is based in Washington, D.C. and has regional representatives across the country."

Emily participated in various events from The HSUS. Specially in those supporting the ban of the Canadian Seal hunt. In 2004's Sundance Film Festival celebrities signed letters to the Canadian Embassy demanding an end to the hunt; Emily was one of them. On year later she joined the ProtectSeas campaing to record a Public Service Announcement to raise awareness about this issue (you can download the audio file here) and in 2007 she took part on another HSUS campaign speaking out at the event to save the seals with fellow actors Reggie Lee ("Prison Break"), Darcy Halsey ("CSI"), Gina Philips ("CSI") and Mirca Monroe ("Scrubs").

The HSUS also organize The Genesis Awards which "pays tribute to the major news and entertainment media for producing outstanding works in television, film, print and the arts which raise public understanding of animal issues." And Emily is part of the event's Honorary Committee next to Lisa Edelstein, Kelly Bishop, Bill Maher, Hayden Panettiere, Persia White and a lot more (to see the full list enter here).

Wayne Pacelle, president of The HSUS welcomed guest to the YES! on Prop 2 gala organized to raise both money and awareness for this popular reform to phase out the most extreme confinement and abuse of animals on factory farms statewide in the past November's ballot.

Women for Women International mobilizes women to change their lives through a holistic approach that addresses the unique needs of women in conflict and post-conflict environments. Emily joined the movement to make a difference every time she searches the internet using GoodSearch.com on behalf of Women for Women International and she's featured from time to time in Good Search's home page.

Back in 2007 she also "teamed up with Jacinda Barrett and hosted a Michelle Jonas private trunk show to raise money to rebuild the lives of Congo women, after becoming involved with Women For Women during her Bones hiatus. LA’s City Review opened its doors for Barrett and Deschanel and friends of the organization—including Heather Graham, Amy Adams, Melanie Lynskey and Michaela Conlin—and offered rack upon rack of summery dresses (at wholesale prices)." The Stop Global Warming Virtual March is "a non-partisan effort to bring citizens together to declare that global warming is here now and that it is time to demand solutions. Global warming is the most urgent issue of our time, and while the problem is of worldwide significance, we recognize that the United States is the biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, responsible for 40% of the industrialized world's emissions, and doing the least about it. The necessary first step must be to encourage Americans to take action. This online grassroots movement is about change -- as individuals, as a country, and as a global community. We are all contributors to global warming and must all be part of the solution."

Emily spoke for The SGW and made a video directly from the Bones' set giving a tip to help stop this issue which I posted around May last year.

Next post will be about the Farm Sanctuary, The Adrienne Shelley Foundation, Save the Chimps, Amnesty International & Rattle the Cage Productions.
